LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO – DON’T MISS THE MARCH & PICNIC ON SATURDAY 5 JULY
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD
With less than a week to go, please make sure you tell your friends, family and colleagues to join us on the march to save our schools and family picnic – including a fantastic Stand-Up for Hove Park School comedy show featuring comedians Shappi Khorsandi and Mark Steel along with Shoreham performance poet Attila the Stockbroker, who’s written a special ode for Michael Gove. Also, on the bill will be music from Robb Johnson and speakers, Dr Caroline Lucas MP and Alasdair Smith of the Anti Academies Alliance
The march begins from the lawns next to King Alfred’s leisure centre at 10.30am on Saturday 5th July, finishing with the picnic in Hove Park.
Remember to bring your wheelie bins, metal buckets and pots & pans for the marching band, which will be conducted by Neal McBride of Retune It – no experience needed!
Also, don’t forget to make your own banners and placards. Do you know someone who will make and carry banners that show the wider support for our campaign e.g. Blatchington Mill/Goldstone parents & kids support Hands Off Hove Park?
We would love it if parents from other schools could join us in solidarity – remember if Hove Park becomes an academy there will be a knock-on effect on other schools in Brighton & Hove.
It isn’t too late to get the word out and rally the troops so please keep spreading the word. LEAFLETS, POSTERS, CAR STICKERS AND BADGES CAN BE PICKED UP 24/7 – let us know what you need by email and we’ll tell you where to pick them up or may be able to deliver to you plus there is an electronic flyer to share with your online networks.
SMALL VICTORIES ALONG THE WAY
We have now submitted the online Change.org and hard copy versions of the Hands Off Hove Park School petition to the consultation. We had to do this before the 20 June deadline for the petition and comments to be taken into account. There were over 2,000 signatures and almost 300 comments on the petition. Let’s hope the Governing Body take notice!
PARENT GOVERNOR ELECTIONS
Nomination forms have now been sent out and the submission deadline has passed. Parent governor elections will need to be held by the school if there are more than three nominations for the three vacant positions. Getting these positions filled is a small victory for this campaign, whose members first discovered and exposed the fact that 50% of parent representation on the Governing Body was missing and the School was planning to press ahead with important decision-making regardless.
Look out for the candidates most likely to represent your views if there is an election, which we expect there will be. Campaign members that have been nominated to stand are Sharon Duggal, Sarah Arjun and Mark Radcliffe.
PARENT BALLOT – JUST SAY NO!
Ballot papers (one per household) have now reached Hove Park parents and carers including those about to enter Year 7. The deadline for these to be sent and received by the Council is Monday 14 July. If you haven’t received a ballot paper, you should have done so by now so contact the Education Dept of Brighton & Hove City Council immediately.
The petition, governor elections and parent ballot would not have happened without parents and carers coming together as Hands off Hove Park School campaign group. It is just a shame we have had to shout so loud before our voices have been heard!
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Come to the March & Picnic where our next steps will be announced – these include:
- Lobbying the final Governor’s Meeting of this academic year on Monday 14 July. Check our website for details of where and when
- Demanding that new parent governors play an active part in the consideration of consultation outcomes and vote on academy conversion
